Summer '05 Laborers - AGC launches new curriculum design.

When LIUNA members go to their local training
funds this summer for training, they will be
pleasantly surprised by what they will experience in the classroom. Laborers-AGC has totally revolutionized the way it develops and designs training programs. What they will find will be an innovative and fresh approach to the look and feel of Laborers’ training that will bring new life to the way they learn.

During a recent presentation to affiliated training fund directors Laborers-AGC’s Executive Director, John J. LeConche said, “ Because Laborers’ training is committed to being the ultimate educational and training resource to LIUNA members, at every stage of their careers, Laborers-AGC has designed and developed a new format for our curriculum and a new way of learning for the Laborer.” He continued, “ Curriculum is our number-one priority. In one short year we changed the entire system of how we develop curriculum and at the same time changed its whole design.”

The change in how we develop curriculum was made by Laborers-AGC with help from industry experts, the new training materials are designed in a modular format. This new format gives more flexibility to local training fund instructors to “build their own courses” using the individual modules from a specific training program. By “building their own courses” instructors can tailor training to meet the needs of their local unions and signatory contractors. This new approach makes Laborers-AGC materials more useful to local training funds and their adaptability makes them more beneficial to LIUNA members.

The change in design was made with LIUNA members in mind, this new approach offers programs that are more interactive. The participants are drawn into the training experience through exercises that place them at the center of learning. This new method of presenting information will positively impact how Laborers learn and increase the benefits that training will have on them and their employers in the future.

Laborers-AGC had already applied its new methods of development and design to multi-module programs in Pipe, Concrete, Hazard Communication, and Construction Math. On tap for this coming fall are multi-module programs in Scaffold, Line and Grade, and Mason Tending. Be on the look out for these exciting new programs that will be available soon at your local training fund.
