Online Blueprint Reading… Lifelong Learning Through Technology

What is lifelong learning and why is it important to all LIUNA members?
Lifelong learning is a long-term commitment to upgrading and refining
your skills by taking advantage of the comprehensive and quality
education and training programs provided by Laborers’ training
throughout North America. Training is not just for apprentices and every
Laborer at every stage of his or her career can benefit from the rewards
of training. A hallmark of Laborers’ training is developing innovative
and exciting ways of making training available to LIUNA members. That is
why we are pleased to announce the offering of blueprint reading
modules, now available online through your local training center.
Designed to develop the blueprint reading skills of construction craft
laborers, the course consists of seven learning modules. Each of the
seven modules examines a set of technical drawings from a recently built
structure. The modules’ lessons are structured in a question and answer
format together with sample illustrations and animated tutorials.
The entire course, totaling 63 hours of instruction, focuses on
Blueprint Reading Principles, CAD Files, Multi-Story Residential,
Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Construction, Bridge
Construction, and Sewers and Water Mains. The highly interactive and
engaging lessons allow laborers to work and learn at their own pace.
The Online Blueprint Reading course, developed through a partnership of
Laborers-AGC, the LIUNA Canadian Tri-Fund Office, the Lifelong Learning
Challenge Fund, the Ontario Educational Communications Authority (TV
Ontario), Fanshawe College, Blue Circle, Inc., Dufferin Construction
Inc., and Soncin Construction, Inc., is one of the first of its kind in
North America.
For more information about the Blueprint Reading Program contact your
local training center. It is an exciting and convenient way of engaging
in lifelong learning and improving your skills to keep you competitive
and marketable and our Union strong.
